How to Select the Right Halloween Costume for Your Dog

Planning to dress up your pet for the upcoming Halloween holiday? About 20 million other pet owners typically do. Read on to get some great tips about picking the right costume for your pet as far as safety and comfort. Also keep in mind that while some pets enjoy playing dress up and showing off, other pets will get anxious and scared.

  1. Always remember that you need a costume that is easy to take on and off with Velcro at the chest and belly rather than something that goes over their head.
  2. Never let your pet wear a costume unless you are supervising them.
  3. If your pet shows signs of stress or anxiety, then just use a cute bandana as an alternative.
  4. Be sure that while your pet is in costume that they can move comfortably, their ability to breathe, see and hear is not restricted. Also that they can drink, eat and go to the bathroom.
  5. If they have no issues wearing the costume, keep an eye out for anything that might be irritating them so you can adjust it. Such as itchy Velcro, scratchy material, parts of the costume that move around, etc.
  6. Bright colors are very important if you plan to take them out trick-or-treating with the kids or anywhere that night so they can be seen by traffic and other people.
  7. Be aware of any parts of the costume that could be a choking hazard such as bows, beads, ribbons and any other loose items. If needed, just remove them.
  8. An appropriate pet costume should not have an overwhelming amount of material, should not overpower your pet and nothing should be restricting their head, covering their eyes or have anything annoying hitting their face when they move around.
  9. Double check that they have proper identification that is current should they get scared and run off or get lost.
  10. Lastly, be sure to keep your pet close, especially in parades, crowded places and in areas with lots of traffic.

We hope these tips help you pick the right pet costume for Halloween! Locally owned pet shops, Petsmart, Petco, Walmart and online are great places to search. Have a great Halloween!
